Antique Dealers

There are several different ways to find some great antiques. The first way that many people use is by searching through their local newspaper. Many times, people will be getting rid of some great antiques and you will be able to pick them up for bargain prices. Other people enjoy searching online through some of the auction sites, such as eBay.

The one way that almost everybody looks for antiques at some point in their life, however, is through one of the antique dealers that are located in their local community. Why would somebody go to an antique dealer when they could make a private sale?

One of the reasons why antique dealers are so popular is because they spend a lot of their time looking for items that may be interesting to you. Even if you do not find exactly what you're looking for from them, they often have enough interesting items in their store to keep you busy and do make for an enjoyable day.

Not only that, if you are really looking for one item that is unique and interesting, they may be able to keep their eye open for just such an item. This is especially helpful if you have been looking for the item for a long time and it just is not turning up anywhere.

Another reason why antique dealers are a great place to search for your antiques is because they are knowledgeable on the subject. Many individuals that like antiques simply do not have the knowledge that one of these antique dealers has.

By using that knowledge, you will be able to avoid problems such as those that are found in antique fraud. Although this problem is not really all that prevalent, it can certainly show up, especially when you are dealing with a private individual.

So when you want to spend your day out of antiquing, make sure that you stop by one of the local antique dealers in your area. They will be able to help you to find exactly what you're looking for and in the meantime you can just look around their shop at all of the other interesting items.

Quick Tip #1

Why are you collecting? Be sure in your own mind what your collection is for. Is it for personal pleasure, in which case the values may be irrelevant, or is it for investment purposes and making money. In which case you must research the particular market and be aware of value and guard against fraudsters and fakes.

Quick Tip #2

Know your subject. There are many ways to do this. Use the Internet and search for blogs and websites in the area you are collecting. Also don't forget the more traditional sources such as your local library, antique shops, art galleries, bookshops and watch out for antique fairs in your area. Get into conversation with the dealers there and pump them for information. (While keeping a firm hold on your credit card!)

Quick Tip #3

Get a receipt! Whatever you are buying, whether for pleasure or profit, obtain a full receipt from the seller. This should contain all relevant information about the item you've bought. You never know, especially if it's a valuable and sought after piece, somewhere in the future you may have to prove where you got it from!
