Antique Dolls

Some people never want to grow up. Others are forced to grow up what they like to hang onto a little bit of their youth. They do this through various methods, but one of the ones that is most common is to collect items that they enjoyed when they were a child. Many people love to collect antique dolls and display them in their house.

What is it that makes antique dolls so special, and where can you find them?

One of the great things about collecting antique dolls is that you're really not limited in the types of dolls you collect. The only real requirement is that they be old. You can get dolls of all shapes and sizes, from all different locations and even dolls that have a particular look to them.

There are even some very famous designers who created dolls that are now antiques. Many people decide to collect antique dolls that are very specific in nature. They take great pride in being able to find rare items that match their collection.

Sometimes people may collect antique dolls that were made by one specific maker. They do this because they liked one particular aspect of the dolls they created. I know that my wife collected some antique dolls and one of the things that she looked for was their eyes. She was very particular about choosing an antique doll with eyes that were very realistic.

Other people might pick a particular area of the world where the doll would originate from. One example of this, that happens to be very popular, is purchasing antique German dolls.

You can find these antique dolls in many different locations. Although it's possible to come across them by accident at an antique mall, it is also much easier to find exactly what you're looking for through a website or online auction where you can search for something specific.

By doing this you will save yourself a lot of time and energy in your searching and also be able to browse through hundreds of doll collections virtually.

Quick Tip #1

Why are you collecting? Be sure in your own mind what your collection is for. Is it for personal pleasure, in which case the values may be irrelevant, or is it for investment purposes and making money. In which case you must research the particular market and be aware of value and guard against fraudsters and fakes.

Quick Tip #2

Know your subject. There are many ways to do this. Use the Internet and search for blogs and websites in the area you are collecting. Also don't forget the more traditional sources such as your local library, antique shops, art galleries, bookshops and watch out for antique fairs in your area. Get into conversation with the dealers there and pump them for information. (While keeping a firm hold on your credit card!)

Quick Tip #3

Get a receipt! Whatever you are buying, whether for pleasure or profit, obtain a full receipt from the seller. This should contain all relevant information about the item you've bought. You never know, especially if it's a valuable and sought after piece, somewhere in the future you may have to prove where you got it from!
