Antique Jewellery

Almost all women, and quite a few men love jewellery. It decorates the body and adds a lot of beauty to the wearer. Not only that, many people wear jewellery in order to complement the clothing that they have on or to commemorate some kind of occasion.

Although there are some beautiful pieces of modern jewellery that are available, and many people choose to wear this type of jewellery, you can't beat the beauty and elegance of antique jewellery.

Antique jewellery comes in all kinds of different shapes and sizes, the same as most modern jewellery comes. Most people that like to collect antique jewellery will have their own particular interests and different styles that they enjoy choosing from. Some of the more popular types range from exquisite in detail to plain and simple, yet very elegant.

There is also jewellery that is available from many different timelines and some people enjoy collecting it because they are interested in a particular pair of time.

One thing that is very important and considering the type of antique jewellery that you would like to collect is the price. Because antique jewellery costs and can vary over a wide range, it is important to decide where you fit in that scale.

Just because you are not able to afford the most expensive antique jewellery does not mean that you can't have a beautiful collection that is also functional. The great thing about antique jewellery is that it is almost always a conversation piece, regardless of the amount of money that you spent on it.

Caring for your antique jewellery is also very important. Because of the delicate nature of many of these items, you will need to look into how to care for each one individually.

Some of them may require special cleaning by a professional while others are easy to maintain yourself and can be done in much the same way that modern jewellery is maintained.

One of the most enjoyable parts about collecting antique jewellery is looking for it. Although you can find antique jewellery online, many people prefer to look at the auction malls where they can browse through dozens or even hundreds of different vendor's collections in order to find that perfect peace.

Quick Tip #1

Why are you collecting? Be sure in your own mind what your collection is for. Is it for personal pleasure, in which case the values may be irrelevant, or is it for investment purposes and making money. In which case you must research the particular market and be aware of value and guard against fraudsters and fakes.

Quick Tip #2

Know your subject. There are many ways to do this. Use the Internet and search for blogs and websites in the area you are collecting. Also don't forget the more traditional sources such as your local library, antique shops, art galleries, bookshops and watch out for antique fairs in your area. Get into conversation with the dealers there and pump them for information. (While keeping a firm hold on your credit card!)

Quick Tip #3

Get a receipt! Whatever you are buying, whether for pleasure or profit, obtain a full receipt from the seller. This should contain all relevant information about the item you've bought. You never know, especially if it's a valuable and sought after piece, somewhere in the future you may have to prove where you got it from!
