Antique Silver

Everybody that loves to antique has one particular thing that they enjoy collecting. Some people like to collect furniture but other people like smaller things that are very specific.

One thing that is in high demand but can still be found in many different antique stores is antique silver.

Most people that are lovers of antique silver started off with a very small collection. Perhaps they had a platter or some type of serving set that they used but after seeing how functional and how beautiful it was they decided that they were going to start a collection of antiques over.

They do this, not only for show but also for how functional it can be.

Antique silver typically comes from one of three places. It was either made in America, Europe or Asia. It is very common to find antique silver that was created in America or Europe but those that were made in Asia are really a rare find.

Perhaps you like one particular type of antiques silver more than the other. If you are searching for a specific make of silver or perhaps even a piece that is difficult to find, here are some suggestions to make your search a little bit easier.

Some people love antiquing so much that they spend their weekends going from shop to shop. You can certainly find some interesting antiques and it makes for an enjoyable day If you are looking for something very specific, however, such as an antique silver piece, you might do better looking online.

The reason that this is the case is that you can just do a simple search either on google or through an auction site such as eBay and you will be able to find out if that particular piece is available in a matter of seconds.

Of course, once you have your antiques silver you're going to want to take care of it. Taking care of antiques silver is done in much the same way as taking care of regular silver. It will tarnish over time and requires cleaning in order to keep it shiny.

Some people enjoy having an antique looking tarnished piece of silver, but for most of us, we like to have it shiny, even though it may be ornate and old.

Quick Tip #1

Why are you collecting? Be sure in your own mind what your collection is for. Is it for personal pleasure, in which case the values may be irrelevant, or is it for investment purposes and making money. In which case you must research the particular market and be aware of value and guard against fraudsters and fakes.

Quick Tip #2

Know your subject. There are many ways to do this. Use the Internet and search for blogs and websites in the area you are collecting. Also don't forget the more traditional sources such as your local library, antique shops, art galleries, bookshops and watch out for antique fairs in your area. Get into conversation with the dealers there and pump them for information. (While keeping a firm hold on your credit card!)

Quick Tip #3

Get a receipt! Whatever you are buying, whether for pleasure or profit, obtain a full receipt from the seller. This should contain all relevant information about the item you've bought. You never know, especially if it's a valuable and sought after piece, somewhere in the future you may have to prove where you got it from!
