Antique Watches

People are interested in time. I think that this is one reason why so many are also interested in collecting antique watches. The only problem that most people run into whenever they are collecting antique watches is finding the perfect one.

Not only that, but some people even break it down into more of a subcategory by collecting either pocket watches or perhaps watches from a particular era. One of the great things about collecting antique watches is the fact that they are generally precision timepieces that still work even down to this day.

So if antique watches is a hobby of yours, here are some ideas that can help you to find just the perfect antique for you.

Many people travel around on the weekends going from antique shop to antique shop seeing what is available. Other people wait until there is some kind of antique bazaar or perhaps they travel great distances in order to go to an antique mall.

Whenever you are at one of these places, you will be able to find almost any antique that you want. Hundreds, and sometimes even thousands of vendors come from all over the world in order to set up their shop at one of these events. Some of these vendors will, no doubt, specialize in antique watches.

Another great place to find antique watches is on the Internet. There are some websites that are specifically designed around the buying and selling of these items.

You can also go on to one of the online auctions, such as eBay, in order to search and find a specific watch.

Many people have ended up with quite a bargain by using an online auction, especially if nobody else is looking for that particular timepiece.

So it really doesn't matter if you are searching for antique pocket watches or for a watch that fits on your wrist, most people would agree that looking for the perfect item is half of the fun.

The other half comes in owning something that is a piece of history and that will continue to keep time down through the ages.

Quick Tip #1

Why are you collecting? Be sure in your own mind what your collection is for. Is it for personal pleasure, in which case the values may be irrelevant, or is it for investment purposes and making money. In which case you must research the particular market and be aware of value and guard against fraudsters and fakes.

Quick Tip #2

Know your subject. There are many ways to do this. Use the Internet and search for blogs and websites in the area you are collecting. Also don't forget the more traditional sources such as your local library, antique shops, art galleries, bookshops and watch out for antique fairs in your area. Get into conversation with the dealers there and pump them for information. (While keeping a firm hold on your credit card!)

Quick Tip #3

Get a receipt! Whatever you are buying, whether for pleasure or profit, obtain a full receipt from the seller. This should contain all relevant information about the item you've bought. You never know, especially if it's a valuable and sought after piece, somewhere in the future you may have to prove where you got it from!
